Day 10 Mutawintji NP to Silverton

We planned to do a walk this morning and got up early. Initially we wanted to do the Mutawintji Gorge Walk but when we arrived at the start of this walk we discovered the track was closed. Bummer!

So we drove to the start of another walk which was the Rockholes Loop Walk. The walk first took us to some Aboriginal Rock engravings, then along the creek and then we climbed past a couple of rock holes to a splendid view over the Homestead Gorge and the Byngnano Range. We enjoyed the view for a bit and ate our packed sandwiches.

After two and a half hours we were back at the car and decided to drive back to the nearby campsite were a nice solar shower awaited J

From there we drove to White Cliffs which turned out to be a bad choice in the end. First of all the drive of 137 km on unsealed road was horrific and we almost killed a herd of 5 or 6 goats running in front of our car. Thankfully Sander payed attention!!

White Cliffs is a little opal town and it was nice to drive around the opal fields to get a bit of a feel for the life of an opal miner! Note; most people live underground in this area because of the heat.

After having lunch at the solar power site we moved on to Wilcannia. We got some more fuel and started to look out for a campsite. We were sick of driving on unsealed roads so that didn’t leave us much choice. The rest areas along the highway were very disappointing too. So we ended up driving all the way back to Silverton.

Most of the evening was spend in the car as a storm passed nearby, bringing with it a strong wind and thunderstorms.
