We got up early this morning, either we are getting used to
the camping rhythm or maybe it is just because of traveling west, which has
given us an extra 1.5 hours to enjoy.
We started the day with French toast for breakfast. While packing our stuff it started raining
which it continued to do for most of the trip towards Uluru. At one point it
became a massive downpour with the occasional flash of lightning.
By the time we got to the Visitor Centre the road and the
parking lot were starting to flood. As the thunder intensified too we just
stayed in the car until after half an hour it finally got less.
We spend the next two hours walking around the Uluru resort,
visiting the info centre, the supermarket and the campground.
After lunch we drove to see Uluru. A ticket into the Park
needed to be purchased at the entrance ($ 25 pp for a 3 day pass). Although
both of us had been here before years ago it again was impressive to see this
massive red rock rising up in front of us.
Meanwhile it was still raining. Not the best weather to see
the rock let alone walk around it but we were witnessing something just a
little bit unique. It doesn’t rain much out here but when it does the little
waterfalls running down the rock provide a pretty amazing sight!
We spent quite a bit of time walking to several viewing
points and taking pictures. A ranger advised that for good pictures we should
check out a waterhole at the other side of Uluru, so that is what we did next. It
was an amazing spot with the sight of a waterfall filling the waterhole. Taking
good pictures however was a challenge as we had the sun (it kept trying to
fight the rain) in front of us.
A funny note; there was a local lady with two young kids and
both of them were so excited jumping and running into puddles. She apologized
for them being so wild and explained to us that rain like this was very unique
for them. It’s something small children around here have never experienced
before in their young lives!
We then drove back to the campground at the resort. We just
set up camp in time as it started pouring down again and it still is whilst I’m
writing this blog post. Apparently it’s going to rain like this for two more
days…
