In Geraldton the lady from the Information Center had told
us about New Norcia, a historic Spanish Monastery. She said it was well worth a
visit.
So this morning that was where we were heading.During the drive we couldn't help but noticing bright oranges trees everywhere. Later we learned this tree is actually called Christmas Tree because it's flowering during the Christmas season.
As soon as we arrived at New Norcia we were pleasantly surprised. It was
so weird to see such beautiful old Spanish buildings in a typical dry
Australian countryside setting. Just very odd!
We had about an hour before a guided tour started so we
prepared some lunch and had a look around in the gift shop.
There were only 5 people on the guided tour. We walked
around the site and entered some of the old historic buildings. The churches
were beautifully painted and decorated from the inside. We learned that it was
built by the Spanish monk Rosendo Salvaro to support aboriginal people and
convert them to the catholic religion. Nowadays the monastery is still
operating and houses 10 Australian monks. One of them treated us on a mini
piano concert which was very special.
Although we are not really into any religion we loved the
tour. So informative and fascinating!
It was already at the end of the afternoon before we drove
on to find a campsite. After about an hour drive we arrived at an old school
site which nowadays is a rest area for travelers. It’s not the prettiest site,
but well taken care of by the local community. It was well worth the gold coin
donation if you ask us!
