Nerren Nerren to Kalbarri

We were awake before 6am and Sander was literally up and running this morning. So we hit the road before 7.30 am.

We arrived at Kalbarri National Park a bit later. We first visited two lookouts, the Ross Graham being a bit underwhelming but the Hawks Head lookout was nice. After seeing so much already we’ve noticed we are getting a bit spoiled. It takes a bit more to impress us nowadays.
Nevertheless we continued exploring the western part of the National Park. We drove to Natures Window first, which was well worth the (very corrugated) drive, if not only for the photo opportunity!
Afterwards we drove to the Z-Bend lookout which was actually impressive. We decided to do the walk into the gorge as well and that was good fun. We had to climb down rocks, ladders, into small and narrow sections of the gorge. It felt adventurous to us and the wind made it bearable heat wise!
A lot of the bushes and plants in this area are flowering at the moment and the colors really pop out in this landscape. Just beautiful!

Back at the carpark it was only a 30 km drive to Kalbarri town. Kalbarri town is situated at the end of where the Murchison River meets the ocean, sheltered by a reef. It’s a beautiful little town. In high season the population grows from 2500 to 7000!
We booked ourselves into Murchison Caravan Park for two nights. The whole west coast has been extremely windy so we made sure we found ourselves a sheltered spot.
We met some nice fellow travellers on this campsite as everybody seemed to gather in the small camp kitchen at night like we did.

The next day we just had a relaxing day at the campsite, getting some washing done, etc. In the afternoon we visited some beaches and lookouts nearby.
The whole west coast has a very Dutch history behind it. The Dutch were the first foreign explores here and also lots of Dutch ships were shipwrecked around this area, the most famous ones being The Batavia and The Zuytdorp. Therefor lots of bays, beaches and islands here have Dutch names. It makes us very much feel at home.

It’s interesting to find out more about our own history!
