This morning we first tried to find some new accommodation. We
tried several hostels for availability and ended up finding a room in Melaleuca
on Mitchell for two nights.
After checking in we walked towards the waterfront. This
area is a ‘new’ development and wasn't there when we were last in Darwin. On
the way there, Sander checked out the old underground oil tunnels (dating back
from World War 2) and I walked around the Waterfront for a bit.
Also we checked out the city Mall, visited Cullen Bay Marina
(although there was not much happening here) and Sunday evening we went to
Mindil Beach Night Market. I remembered this night market from my stay here
years ago and it’s still one of the nicest markets I have ever visited. It’s
just so nice to choose dinner from the market stalls offering food from all
over the world and then be able to eat it on the beach whilst watching the
sunset.
And even the hostel life wasn't too bad for a change.
Although it was noisy during the night, it was also nice to meet some other
travelers.
All in all we think Darwin is lovely! It’s a nice compact
city offering a variety of nice restaurants and bars, shops and markets and
there are heaps of parks and nice reserves around. The atmosphere is pretty
laid back and although accommodation could use some improvement we enjoyed our
stay thoroughly!
