After giving the car a bit of attention and maintenance this
morning we drove back to Katherine. We went to the Tourist Information Center
to get some info about the Savannah Way. We were thinking of driving this way
towards Queensland but at the info center they told us that a big part of this
road was closed until further notice due to flood damage.
After stocking up in the last town of any significance for a
long way we headed to Mataranka once again and stayed at Elsey National Park.
We had a relaxed night with a campfire and listened to the wild donkeys in the
woods.
We were thinking of taking the Roper Highway and Nathan
River Road the next day, but one of the other campers advised us not too
because of the large amount of mining trucks (road trains) that use this one
lane highway, causing dangerous driving conditions.
So again we changed our plans and we drove even further
south the next day to Daly Waters where we took the turn onto the Carpentaria
Highway. This again is a ‘one lane
highways’ that are present in the outback. Note, the one lane is for traffic
coming from both directions! When you pass another car, you either get off the
road to give way or both drive with 2 wheels on the bitumen and the other on
the dirt.
The road turned out to be very boring. There was nothing to see or do along the way
and after 250 km we decided to set up camp. The rest area where we stopped had
a surprisingly nice view and was tidy. We prepared dinner while enjoying the
sun set in the far distance.
Note; these mounds are made by termites (little ant-like insects). We've seen mounds as high as 3 to 4 meters but apparently even taller ones exist!
